Iowa is the most Middle American of American states and among the most successful in achieving prosperity, health and civic engagement. Colin Woodard desscribes it being part of the North American Midlands, a region notable for its pluralist middle class and "where ethnic and ideological purity have never been a priority, government has been seen as an unwelcome intrusion, and political opinion has been moderate."

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, in 2009 the Iowa State Legislature was 22.7%% female. That is far less than gender parity and actually lower than the national average of 24.3%.
